Introducing a New Holiday
Your Opinion Makes This Successful
What happens on Reclaiming Her Time Day?
On July 27th, we celebrate the contributions of contemporary Black women by acknowledging those contributions and redistributing wealth directly to the individuals who made those contributions.
Why July 27th?
- This is the day Congressional Representative Maxine Waters famously reclaimed her time on the congress floor. As a congressional representative, Ms. Waters often reclaims her time, and this was the day when she went viral on twitter and we all had a great time.
What are contemporary Black women supposed to do on Reclaiming Her Time Day?
Whatever they want. Some possibilities may include receiving, celebrating themselves, celebrating other contemporary Black women, or ignoring the entire concept.
Is this white saviorism or otherwise helping where it wasn't invited?
We don't think so. We have certainly all been invited to address resource imbalances and access inequities. Establishing systems and a routine to proactively address misogynoir is a step toward repairing relationships caused by the collective complicity with white supremacy. A holiday provides both a disruption and a reflection point. Granted, this could become insufferable, so our intention is to focus on being constructive, productive + proactive.
What's the status of this project?
This is the second year of Reclaiming Her Time Day. Last year, we successfully created the holiday and explored ways to observe the day. At that time, we were focused on addressing the wage gap, and then the largest layoff in Federal history disproportionately impacted a generation of Black women in the work force. This year, we're exploring possibilities, adapting strategies, and refining our focus. We hope to widen the circle of celebrants in order to ensure the holiday is expansive enough to serve it's purpose.
Why do you want my opinion for the design brief?
- A design brief is used to describe an idea, so that multiple artists can interpret the work in their own form. The survey asks three sets of questions: 1) what the day might feel, look, and sound like. 2) how you might celebrate and grow in accountability, and 3) what might community celebrations look like.
- Your responses to these questions will inspire the development and design of this holiday in the coming years. Thank you!!
